Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Friday said he agrees with Bill Gates’ assessment the U.S. should implement a national lockdown to stem the spread of the coronavirus, at least “for the time being.”
“I thought Bill Gates was really insightful” (on CNN last night), Biden told Anderson Cooper during virtual town hall meeting on CNN.
“I wish everyone could have seen that program. Why would we not err on the side of making sure that we are not going to have a repeat. What happens if, in fact, we don’t lock down across the country, we leave other places open, we find out because we haven’t been able to test everyone that there is an upsurge or a new wave of coronavirus, and we’re back in the same deal.”
Biden also said he thinks Americans will need to self-isolate until late May.
“Based on the data I’m getting from medical experts, they indicate to me that it’s more likely to be sometime after the 31st of May, into June, before we would be in that position,” the former vice president said.
“But nobody knows for certain. What we do know is that it’s a false choice to say that you either open the economy or everything goes to hell. . . . You cannot make this economy grow until you deal with the virus.”
